Yuri Kashiwagi adalah pianis jenius sekaligus guru paruh waktu di Tokyo. Ketika mantan rekannya Haruko pergi cuti hamil, dia meminta Kashiwagi untuk mengambil alih untuknya sebagai penasihat paduan suara di sebuah sekolah menengah di salah satu Kepulauan Goto di Prefektur Nagasaki. Ketika Kashiwagi tiba, tugas pertamanya bagi mahasiswa barunya adalah menulis surat untuk diri mereka sendiri 15 tahun di masa depan. Surat-surat yang mereka tulis akhirnya mengungkapkan kekhawatiran rahasia mereka dan kekhawatiran tentang mencapai usia dewasa.

Pada musim panas 2015 di Tokyo, Jepang. Ryoichi bermimpi menjadi seorang rocker punk ketika ia masih muda, tapi akhirnya menjadi seorang karyawan di sebuah perusahaan bagian alat musik. Dia memiliki perasaan pada Yuko, tapi dia tidak bisa mengungkapkannya. Suatu hari, takdir mempertemukannya dengan kura-kura di atap sebuah department store. Ia menamai kura-kura itu PIKADON dan dia sangat memujanya, tapi rekan-rekan kerjanya menertawakan dia. Ryoichi melempar PIKADON ke toilet. Dia menyesali apa yang dia lakukan. Kura-kura itu melewati saluran air limbah dan bertemu seorang pria tua yang tinggal di bawah tanah. Sesuatu kemudian terjadi.

The turtle goes through sewerage and meets an old man who lives in the underground. Something then happens.

Andrew (Miles Teller) adalah drummer jazz muda yang ambisius, berpikiran searah dalam mengejar karirnya ke puncak musik elit. Ia belajar di bawah arahan mentor kejam dan tegas bernama Terence Fletcher (J.K. Simmons). Tapi ambisi Andrew untuk menjadi drummer Jazz terbaik justru mulai kehilangan jati dirinya.
Setelah beberapa insiden yang mencelakai Andrew, Terence dipecat dari pekerjaannya sebagai pengajar musik. Beberapa waktu kemudian, Terence kembali bertemu Andrew dan memintanya untuk mengisi drum yang kosong pada pertunjukan yang akan dipimpin Terence.
Di pertunjukan yang sedang berlangsung itu, Andrew dijebak karena mengira Terence akan membawakan Whiplash, padahal bukan. Dipermalukan di depan penonton, Andrew lalu menunjukkan kemampuannya membawakan Caravan tanpa melihat map bar musiknya. Musik yang sulit dibawakan oleh pemain drum manapun.

Andrew (Miles Teller) is a young ambitious jazz drummer, unidirectional minded in pursuing his career to the top of the elite music. He studied under the direction of cruel and expressly mentor named Terence Fletcher (JK Simmons). But Andrew's ambition to be the best jazz drummer actually begin to lose the identity.
After several incidents that harm Andrew, Terence was fired from his job as a music teacher. Later, Terence met Andrew again and asked him to fill the empty drum on the show which will be led by Terence.
In the ongoing show, Andrew was framed because he thought Terence will bring Whiplash, but it's not. Being humiliated in front of audience, Andrew showed his ability by bringing Caravan without seeing his music folder bar. A music which is hard to play by any drummers.
